Adoptions

There are two types of simplified adoptions by relatives:

1. Step Parent Adoption

In a step parent adoption, a step parent is seeking to terminate the rights of the non-custodial birth parent and to adopt a step child.

2. Kinship Adoption

In a kinship adoption a person is seeking to adopt a child who is related to them and seeking to terminate the rights of both birth parents. However, a kinship adoption is limited to grandparents, siblings, half-siblings, aunts, uncles and first cousins and the relative must have had physical custody of the child for a period of one year or more. Other restrictions apply.
