Fees and Expenses for Adoption

Attorney fees vary depending on the complexity of the case.  A fee of $2,000 or more is possible.  Fees can exceed $2,000.00 if the case is complicated or contested by a birth parent.

The following are common expenses relating to adoptions by relatives:

Filing Fee: The court charges a filing fee to begin the case.

Criminal records: Courts require a records search by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, FBI and the Central Registry of Child Abuse.  These costs may exceed $100

Service of Process: The petition for adoption and notice of adoption must be served on the birth parents. A process server may charge approximately $60.00.

Publication fees: If the birth parent cannot be located, notice of the adoption must be published in a newspaper at an approximate cost of $80.00.
